The Effects on African American Slaves
All of these events had major effects on those who were slaves at the time. After a large number of people moved to California, the government was pressured to admit it as a state. California wanted to be admitted as a free state, but the Government didn't want to upset the balance of free and slave states. This was resolved with the Compromise of 1850, which allowed California to be free while allowing Utah and New Mexico to be slave states. This compromise also stopped the importation of more slaves from Africa. The Missouri Compromise also affected slaves, but more in a negative way, because it allowed slaves to be owned in Missouri.
