A few months ago, the compromise was made. Unfortunately, I am still a slave. I pick cotton in the fields by day for little reward, but at least master is good to me. I hope to someday be free. I may run to the North, to the free lands, but I do not because I wish not to be caught in the attempt. I hear stories of free black men and women, and I hope one day I can join them.
From what I've heard from my master, it seems a compromise will be made soon. I'm not sure if my homeland of Missouri will be a slave state or a free state. If we are free, I don't know where I will go, or what I will do. I am still waiting for news.
