The War of 1812
Journal Entry: A General Store Owner
January 11, 1808
Recently, President Jefferson signed the Embargo Act into effect. This cut off all of our trade with Britain. While I once supported the president's foreign decisions, this is causing a disaster for me. Before the act, about half of my store's revenue was from tea sales. Now that we cannot trade with Britain, there is no tea to sell. Many other products, even those made in America, have become much more expensive for me to buy due to the poor economy. I need this act to be lifted. |
The War of 1812 was the result of a great amount of tension that had built up after the American Revolution. Britain attempted to restrict American trade with France, their rival nation. To counter this, President Jefferson attempted to block all trade with Great Britain, but the result on the American economy was disastrous. Eventually, the U.S. ended up going to war with Britain for two and a half years.
